Why I set 12 New Year’s Resolutions

Ahhh, the long awaited 2017. Along with this new year, comes many people wanting to reinvent themselves; this new year also brings about those famous last words: “new year, new me!” It is so easy to become motivated with the new year atmosphere. Many people, including myself, want to jump right into their goals. This kind of motivation is exhilarating! There have been years that I’ve said to myself, “I’m going to get fit!” January comes and goes and I’ve gone from working out three times a week to once or not at all.

 

Last year in December I discovered a technique that completely changed my outlook on resolutions and goal setting in general. Rather than setting one vague goal for the entire year, I set small, achievable goals to work towards every month. This method gave me something to look forward to every month. Since these were small tasks to better myself, I was having fun and staying motivated.

 

Below are my 12 New Year’s Resolutions. I cannot recommend this method enough. I grew so much last year because of the goals I set in January. Knowing that I was steadily improving as a person gave me the motivation to keep up with these goals. Feel free to use this method and adapt it to fit your lifestyle.

 

So without further ado, here are my 12 New Year’s Resolutions!

 

January – Go Vegan

This is a big goal to set for my first month. I’ll be honest for a girl who loves steak, fried chicken, and anything smothered in cheese, this has been hard. However, I’ve done a lot of research on why you should go vegan, why it is healthy, etc and decided to make the switch.  It has only been a few days but I’m excited to continue the lifestyle.

 

February – Read Every Day

This was my February goal last year, too! Needless to say, I need to develop the habit again…

 

March – Get Outside

Whether I am just sitting in a lawn chair or walking around Audubon Park, I want to be outside more. I spend way too much time under industrial dorm room lighting surrounded by cinderblock walls.

 

April – Focus on Family

I love my family. Let me repeat, I LOVE MY FAMILY. They are so supportive, and I want to do some special things for them this month.

 

May – Find a Summer Job

This one is pretty self-explanatory. I’m in college. I need money. ‘Nuff said.

 

June – Find a Cause, Make it Personal

Volunteering was a goal that I had last year as well. While I am constantly looking for volunteer opportunities, I have some ideas in mind that would be great to implement at this time of year.

 

July – Dance Everyday

Why not?

 

August – Simplify

By this time summer vacation will be through and the new school year will be heading for me like a freight train. I tend to keep clutter and things that should probably just be thrown away. I want to really evaluate what I’m bringing to the new school year and see how it will benefit my space, studies, and overall well-being.

 

September – Connect

I don’t mean connect on social media, I mean really connect. I want to get coffee, lunch, have game nights, anything that will help me get to know others on a more personal level.

 

October – Go Somewhere New

Anywhere.

 

November – Me Time

This was one of my goals last year and it was absolutely fantastic. It is often seen as selfish to take time for yourself, but you are so worth it.

 

December – Give

Yes, it’s Christmastime. The wonderful time of year when everyone forgets what’s really important to buy a bunch of stuff for people. Well, this year I want to give more: more time, more attention, more love. Small gestures will go a long way.
